The DC-10A and DC-10B

These two designs were based on the DC-10-3 and first named DC-10-3A and -3B. Anyway, the "3" was dropped after only trijets were offered. The -A was slightly larger and heavier than the originaly DC-10-3 with 35 000 lb (156 kN) engines. This also improved the range slightly. The -B was larger, but had the same engines and was a pure domestic aircraft. In this phase, the old tail design was dropped and substituded by a straight air inlet. The new tail structure was named "banjo" and is the brandmark of the DC-10 and MD-11.
