AIR ZAIRE
After Air Afrique, Air Zaire was the second airline in Africa to receive the DC-10 in 1973. The aircraft was originally ordered by the German charter airline Atlantis as DC-10-10 but the carrier went into bankruptcy and Air Zaire took over the delivery slot. A second aircraft followed in 1974 and both of them were used on flights to Europe and also some African routes. Although orders for the MD-11 and MD-80 were placed in the early 1990s to replace the DC-10 and the 737-200s, Air Zaire was struggling already and one of the DC-10s was sold in 1985. The second was stored in Tel Aviv after mounting debts and Air Zaire finally collapsed in 1995. A third aircraft was operated by Skyjet in late 1992.
