AIR FRANCE
(France)

When the DC-10-30 was winning order by order in Europe at the beginning of the 1970s, the French flag carrier was not interested in this aircraft. The long-range routes were operated by 707s and 747s and the airline had no more money to order a fleet of an additional type of aircraft after the commitment to the Concorde. But almost 20 years after the introduction of the DC-10, Air France was looking for an aircraft smaller than the 747 as they noted (more than a decade later than other airlines!) that the aircraft was too large for some of its routes. In 1988, when main competitor UTA was acquired, the first 300seater joined Air Frances fleet in form of the DC-10. The five aircraft not only operated the network of the former UTA, which mainly consisted of routes to Africa, but was also a common sight at other airports in Air France’s network. As the ordered A340s became available together with four aircraft leased from Sabena, the DC-10s were phased out. Most of them were acquired by its new main competitor AOM so that the DC-10 became only a very small chapter in Air France’s history.
